Creating
meaningful places

HVIDRUM. /ʋiː-ʁɔm/
noun
1. Whitespace

Hvidrum is a Finnish furniture company that loves lasting aesthetics. We produce long-lived, beautiful pieces that create meaningful spaces in the built environment. We love locality — in both materials and manufacturing. We continuously develop our partner network to offer clients workable solutions for even the most specific needs.

Founded in Helsinki in 2007, Hvidrum began by designing outdoor furniture for culturally significant and demanding settings such as cemeteries, then expanded into all public spaces. Clients can choose from our wide collection or challenge us to design something unique together.

Circular design

Up-cycled
collection

We humans need to learn to think and act more resource-wisely. Development should not stop — new things are always created and built — but how we do it must change. At Hvidrum, we have a unique opportunity to create something new from the starting point of a circular economy.

Our Up-Cycled concept transforms popular products from our collection into recycled versions made from reclaimed materials — sturdy log frames from demolished buildings, beloved trees felled for street repairs, stone foundations from old buildings turned into monuments, offcuts turned into benches. The possibilities are endless.

All wood, stone and concrete materials used in Up-Cycled products are 100% recycled and recyclable. The materials we use can be hundreds of years old. Every reclaimed log or plank saved also saves an equally-sized living tree from being felled.

Up-Cycled products are examples of true circular economy — local materials, durable, long-lived, timeless design. All materials used are always traceable, and their story follows each product as a digital fingerprint.

Materials

Our Up-Cycle concept helps cities, municipalities and other public space developers solve recycling challenges by turning decommissioned materials into new products. You can order Up-Cycled products even if you cannot supply the raw materials yourself — we can source them from elsewhere.

All products in the Hvidrum collection are also available as Up-Cycled versions. They are designed to be modular so that larger compositions can be built from them. The natural variation in salvageable old material dimensions is solved in production with simple and durable details.

Design services

Change is always an opportunity. At Hvidrum, we advise clients on their development projects. Our speciality is resource-wisdom in design. We combine expertise from the construction industry and furniture design.

We also assist clients in planning urban areas — parks, cemeteries and other multi-functional spaces.

About Hvidrum

Purpose.
Whitespace.

Our purpose

Hvidrum means whitespace — a well-known design concept that emphasises the intentional use of empty space to create clarity and balance. Its idea is to add clarity by giving different elements room to breathe.

We at Hvidrum are dedicated to designing products that function as 'whitespace' in their own environment — enabling and supporting the life around them without drawing too much attention. Our products are designed to serve people as well as possible and consume nature as little as possible.

Production

Hvidrum does not have its own production facility. Instead we utilise a network of contract manufacturers, enabling us to work with the widest variety of materials very locally and avoid long transport distances that would unnecessarily increase our carbon footprint. Production timelines are always agreed separately as part of the ordering process.

Professionals

Hvidrum's lead designer is the company's founder, architect and designer Peter Westerlund. Peter has studied and worked as an architect in both Germany and Finland, specialising in timber construction. Since 2007 he has designed public urban spaces and furniture. When developing new products, Peter works closely with specialists in stone and metalworking to fully utilise the unique properties of each material.
